In 1954, Nash-Kelvinator Corp. merged with Hudson Motor Car Company, resulting in the American Motors Corporation (AMC). During the 1950s, most manufacturers designed spacious family-sized vehicles, while Nash Motor Company focused more on smaller economy cars. Before eventually developing into “the Metropolitan,” the vehicle was a Nash Experimental International concept car designed by William J. Flajole.

After the Metropolitan’s positive debut, Nash partnered with Austin, an English-based manufacturer for production, and Fisher and Ludlow for the car’s body. Production began across the pond in October of 1953 in Longbridge, England. Despite being a small car option during a big vehicle trend, the Metropolitan appealed to buyers in the market for a reasonably priced, nice-looking vehicle they could be proud to bring home. By 1963, more than 90,000 Metropolitans were sold.
