Unabashedly, Ford advertised the 1934 Ford 40 Cabriolet as “One of the best-looking cars on the road – at any price.” Calling annual model changes “the curse of the industry,” Henry Ford realized that introducing the V8 wasn’t enough. Continuing to fall behind Chevrolet in the sales race, Ford realized that he needed a combination of speed and good looks to increase sales. Following significant improvement in 1933, the 1934 Cabriolet once again got a bit of a refresh.
A new radiator design topped off with the iconic Greyhound radiator cap featured vertical bars that slanted backward to match the windshield slope and the side hood louvers. The V8 insignia is displayed prominently on the grill. Acorn-shaped headlights and a curvaceous one-piece front bumper with a center dip let the Cabriolet put its best face forward. Taking time from his criminal activities, Clyde Barrow wrote Henry Ford to tell him, “What a dandy car you make.”
