The partnership between Ford Motor Company and Carroll Shelby began in 1965, and the Shelby GT500 debuted two years later in 1967. However, it was 1968 that proved to be a pivotal year in the development of the GT500, marking a significant evolution in its performance and identity. In its second year of production, the vehicle proved to be one of the most popular produced by Ford Motor Company. In 1968 Ford assumed production of the Shelby automobile line moving production from Carroll Shelby’s facility in Los Angeles to Michigan. Ford decided to revamp the car’s exterior, offering coupe and convertible bodies. Both body styles received an updated front-end design, including a new hood with twin air scoops, a thinner chrome bumper, a sizeable grille, revised head and tail lamps, sequential rear turning signals inspired by the 1965 Thunderbolt, and a spoiler. The base price of the 1968 coupe was $4,317 and $4,438 for the convertible. One of the most notable updates to the Shelby GT500 was Ford’s decision to expand the engine offerings. Initially, the 1968 Shelby GT500 was fitted with a 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor V8. In April 1968, Ford unveiled their “Cobra Jet” V8. The partnership between Ford and Carroll Shelby gradually began to fray and ultimately ended with Carroll Shelby leaving Ford in 1970. This marked the end of a partnership that created one of America’s most iconic muscle cars.
