This 1956 Hillegass Sprint Race Car is a significant example of mid-century American dirt-track engineering. Built as a “tube-type frame #6,” the car is believed to have been constructed by Hiram Hillegass, a notable builder of sprint race cars, and intended for Frank Anfuso, the owner of Highway Auto Body in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Hillegass completed the Sprint Race Car in 1949. Sprint car racing was first recorded during the 1920s. These races took place on short fairground dirt tracks, unlike other traditional car races. By the 1950s, sprint car racing grew into its own distinct motorsport with an abundant following. This car went on to win 99 races and five championships until its final lap in 1975. Notable racers who drove this Hillegass Sprint Race Car include Mario Andretti, Eddie Sachs, Steve Yanigan, Lou Johnson, Bobby Courtright, Hank Rodgers, and Bill Holland.

In 1987, Gene Weaber purchased the Hillegass Sprint Race Car and embarked on a decade-long restoration. Alongside Kenny Rasp and Frank Murry, Weaber restored the mechanics to match the original design and configured it to its 1956 race configuration. After buying the vehicle, Weaber wanted nothing but the best for the Sprint Race Car’s restoration. When it came time to paint the lettering on the car, Weaber hired Master Letterer, Larry Spanker, who hand-painted the “Highway Auto Body” and “Thunderbird” onto the body. The restoration was completed in June 1997. Today, the car is proudly preserved as part of the Savoy Collection, where it represents an important chapter in American motorsports history.
