During the postwar era, a few enterprising auto manufacturers sought to create high-performance cars that could “race on Sunday, sell on Monday.” Hudson’s ‘step down’ chassis gave them a distinct edge on the racetrack. The Hornet’s streamlined styling created aerodynamic efficiency, and its low silhouette provided superb handling and track adherence. The car’s 6-cylinder engine was not an impediment, and handily whipped vehicles with 8-cylinder engines.
The secret to Hudson’s 6-cylinder engine was the special “Power Dome”. Also known as the “Twin H-Power” package, it included two carburetors and manifolds that significantly increased horsepower and torque. Hudson’s active support of their cars in stock car racing paved the way for factory-sponsored race teams. Piloted by era-famous drivers like Lee Petty and Fonty Flock, the low-slung and speedy Hornet was very competitive in NASCAR despite facing fast cars like the Oldsmobile 88.
