AMC’s Marlin had its foundation laid on the 1964 Rambler Tarpon concept car from the design studio directed by Richard Teague. Originally intended to be a competitor to the Mustang, the Marlin ultimately evolved into an intermediate-size car. In 1967, it was transformed into a full-size fastback hardtop coupe. In addition, buyers had a choice of either a six- or eight-cylinder engine, with the option for either a manual or automatic transmission.

In the third year, AMC finally got the formula right, but better late than never wasn’t good enough. The Marlin was essentially a six-passenger car designed for the man who envisioned himself in a sports car and not a family wagon. However, Dodge’s fastback Charger won the race for buyers’ wallets. It didn’t help that AMC cars were usually an acquired taste, and the Marlin was no exception. Following lackluster sales, the Marlin became a fish out of water permanently after the 1967 production run.
