During the Great Depression, Chevrolet saw the opportunity to manufacture a dual-purpose vehicle. The Coupe Pickup combines a personal sedan with a commercial truck, eliminating the need for two different vehicles. A standard coupe was fitted with a miniature pickup bed with wood flooring, metal sides, and a tailgate similar to the larger ½ ton pickup. A custom canvas top snapped into place was supposed to keep out rain and dust.
The cover failed to keep out the rain and snow, causing significant rust problems in the truck bed and throughout the vehicle. In 1937, a truck lid was introduced, allowing owners to convert the truck to a coupe. New safety features included the Turret Top and hydraulic brakes. Often referred to as the “Foreman” coupe, it has been mistaken for the Australian Model Holden. Produced continuously from 1936 to 1942, it is believed that only 10 Coupe Pickups have survived.
