The original concept of the MG began in 1951 when Syd Evener dreamed of a new streamlined MG sports car to replace the T-series. The project was delayed until 1953, which was a stroke of good luck. The 1.5 liter BMC-B series engine, now ready for production, was quickly incorporated into the new car. To signify its position as “the first in a new line,” the car was named the MGA.
Making its official debut at the London Motor Show in 1955 and launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the MGA was enthusiastically welcomed. “At long last.” Motor Trend applauded MG for abandoning “its old-but-handsome lines for new and handsomer ones.” Say goodbye to MG’s traditional square-riggers, the streamlined MGA proved itself capable of almost 100 mph and went on to become the best-selling British sports car in the USA up to that time.
