Studebaker heralded that their 1956 models had “Craftsmanship with Flair.” Executives elected to make their cars resemble the signature styling set forth by their arch competitor, General Motors. The cars looked fresh and up-to-date, and a new 289 cubic-inch engine was standard in the limited-production President Classic Sedan. All of this should have driven buyers to Studebaker dealerships, but the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Ford Fairlane, both 4-door sedans, ruled the market by an overwhelming margin.
The car features a two-tone paint scheme of Midnight Black with Snowcap White accents around the windows and inside the distinctive side molding. Studebaker was exceptionally proud of its “Cyclops Eye” speedometer mounted on the top of the dashboard. “You know your exact speed at a glance!” promotional materials proclaimed. This car has been meticulously restored, and the efforts have been recognized in shows and national Concours d’Elegance events.
