Unveiled in 2004, the Solstice was Pontiac’s first attempt at another sports car since the Fiero. Designed by Franz von Holzhausen who worked on the New Beetle and the Mazda Furai, the car’s styling had consumers reaching for their wallets. It was cheaper than the Mazda Miata, which at the time was a great value compared to the ultimate compact sports car like the Lotus Elise. Initially released only as a convertible, a hardtop was added later.

Good looks didn’t compensate for an underpowered engine. Both the manual and automatic transmissions were plagued with quirks. Accessing the battery required jacking up the car. The car’s major flaw…a lack of cupholders! There is only one hidden by the glovebox. The Solstice saw success in the SCCA, winning its class in 2007. GM’s bankruptcy forced it to abandon the Pontiac division and in 2010, the last year of production, only 30 Solstices were made.
