When the Lafayette Motor Co. of Mars Hill, Indianapolis IN first opened, its president was a secret. Several ex-General Motors employees were involved in the design of the cars. Finally, the truth came out. Charles Nash, former president of GM and founder of Nash Motors was in charge. His goal was to produce a luxury car of his own, separate from Nash Motors, and he raided his old employer, GM, for personnel capable of fulfilling his dream.
Former Cadillac designer and LaFayette head designer D. McCall White claimed the LaFayette was “far ahead of any previous automobile built under [my] supervision.” Cars were built in a factory that manufactured hand grenades. Unfortunately, LaFayette’s finances weren’t as strong as GMs. By the end of 1923 shareholders were informed that due to financial difficulties the company would be sold to Ajax Motors Co., a company owned entirely by Nash Motors. Nash never attempted a luxury car again.
