The 1939 LaSalle went through a dramatic restyling at the hands of the same designers who created the custom Cadillac-Fleetwood. With a reduced wheelbase, their challenge was to make the car look long, low, and luxurious. They successfully achieved this with a narrow one-piece vertical grill, flanked by headlights in a forward motion position and featuring side wind splits. Also, across the front of the grill, the LaSalle badge was prominently displayed.

Despite the beautiful styling, the 1939 LaSalle faced a strong headwind in the form of an economic recession. This time, the advertising department came to the rescue with catchy tag lines. “No, I didn’t get rich – I just got wise!” and “No fooling – your car cost more than my La SALLE!” Ads promoting LaSalle’s reputation for dependable, reliable, and whisper-quiet transportation, coupled with cost-conscious pricing for the discriminating buyer, made it a popular choice with consumers.
