In 1940, when LaSalle was removed from the Cadillac lineup, enthusiasts had nothing to fear. The redesigned vehicles debuting in 1940 were classics in the making. Combining technological advancements and creative ingenuity, the future appearance of American automobiles was dramatically impacted. Perhaps the most distinctive features were the chrome horizontal grille with egg-crate texture and the high-crowned hood. Conceived by GM stylist Arthur Ross, this revolutionary design caught the eye of GM’s head of design, Harley Earl.

Earl habitually visited the design studios late at night. Left out on a desk, Earl spied Ross’ design and stated, “I can make a front end out of this.” Besides the new grille, the 1941 Cadillac offered provisions for fog lamps, hood louvers, parking and turn signals, and the Cadillac crest with raised wings. Bumpers were robust with a grille guard. A unique design feature of the Series 60 was the extended front fenders, which incorporated the front doors.
