Edsel Ford, President of the Lincoln Motor Co., had a goal for himself and the company, stating, “Father made the most popular car in the world. I want to make the best car in the world.” Teaming up with Bob Gregorie, the pair created the beautiful 1939 Lincoln Continental Zephyr. The Zephyr name was dropped in 1941, and like other vehicles, production was discontinued due to the war in 1942. Edsel Ford’s passing in 1943 left a void when production resumed in 1946.
New models were essentially warmed-over designs from 1942. The Continental received a large, crisscross-patterned grille and a heavier bumper. The Lincoln Continental name was proudly displayed on each side of the hood. That same year, the Museum of Modern Art displayed the Continental as an example of design excellence. Noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright purchased two and declared the Continental “the most beautiful car in the world.” Economic changes would force the end of production in 1948.
