As the age of hand-built coachwork cars drew to a close, the Woodie rose to the position of not only the customized vehicle to own, but also the most expensive offering from the Big Three. The white ash and mahogany trim gave the Town and Country an upscale, sophisticated look. The wood trim was handcrafted by Pekin Wood Products. Employing tongue and groove, a fine woodworking technique, the cars were actually rolling pieces of high-quality furniture.

Town & Country models were well appointed and came with upgraded upholstery, push-button radios, electric clocks, and the All-Weather Air control system. The car’s unique signature feature was the “clamshell opening” or “barrel back” rear doors. 1948 was the last year, however, for the real wood trim. Beginning in 1949, DI-NOC inserts replaced the real mahogany panels. Later that year these were changed to body color painted panels.
