The 1950 Ford differed little from its predecessor, but for Ford Motor Company this was a savvy move. Consultant George Walker’s 1949 model was a customer favorite, so a minor facelift was applied to the already winning design. To further enhance Ford’s image as forward thinking, a convertible was launched to compete with GM’s new Chevy Bel Air. Little concern for getting weight and costs down, Ford integrated high-quality plastic parts throughout their cars.
Gordon Buehrig of Duesenberg, Auburn and the 810 Cord fame joined the Ford team as a designer in 1950. Implementing high-impact molded acrylic features, Buehrig gave future Ford designers a strong foundation to build upon. Ford championed that the 1950 models had “50 improvements for ’50” including re-designed hood ornaments and push button handles on exterior doors. The boom of 1950 ensured that the only problem to solve was how many cars could be built to meet the heavy consumer demand.
