The 1949 Ford was the first all-new automobile design by any of the Big Three automakers after World War II. Ford was struggling financially after the war and was on the brink of bankruptcy. The new design, nicknamed the “Shoebox” Ford, was built from 1949-1951. This new design was an instant success. It not only saved Ford but also introduced the modern, streamlined car design in the United States.
Just like the 1950 Ford Pickup, this Ford Custom Convertible received a full restoration, including an upgrade to the engine (Ford Crate 347 cu. in. stroker), transmission (AODE 4-Speed Auto), and suspension (TCI Mustang II). It was also finished in the same Chrysler Miami Cream color as the truck. In 2018, it placed top 25 at Shades of the Past Hot Rod Round Up, “Best of Show” at Mountain Moonshine Festival and Car Show, and “Best 50’s Hot Rod” at Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama.
