1952 saw Oldsmobile rise to fourth industry-wide, and first in sales for cars equipped with automatic transmissions. A win at the Southern 500 NASCAR race at Darlington was the biggest of the three race events won that year. Now the same Rocket V-8 engine that propelled Oldsmobiles to victory on the track was available in the company’s top-of-the-line Ninety-Eight Series. Three body styles: two-door hardtop, two-door convertible, and four-door sedan gave customers plenty of choices.
Traditionally known for sturdy, well-engineered cars that lacked excitement, Oldsmobile’s release of the Futuramic 98 in 1948 signaled a change. The low-slung Ninety-Eight rode on a new X-member frame with four-wheel coil-spring suspension. The handling was crisp, and the ride was smooth as silk. Being GM’s “engineering” division meant Oldsmobile showcased “industry firsts.” This car has won both Junior and Senior AACA Awards.
