The Corvette was in continuous production for more than 70 years; however, the Corvette’s beginning was less than spectacular. Harley Earl, GM’s Head of Design, was convinced that America needed a sports car. However, the majority of Americans were more concerned with starting families, and two-seater sports cars didn’t meet their needs. Had it not been for the power and influence Earl had at GM, the Corvette may have quickly faded away.
When it debuted at the 1953 Motorama, public reception was positive, and GM President Harlow Curtis approved immediate production. However, the public never got the opportunity to buy the car. “Better are your chances at winning the Mille Miglia on a kiddie car,” lamented Motor Trend. Purchasing the car was by invitation only. Of the 300 produced, only 180 found buyers. An automatic transmission and an underpowered I-6 engine added to the lackluster sales. The Corvette found its savior in Zora Arkus Duntov, whose engineering genius transformed the Corvette into the great American sports car.
