In 1949, a small group of MG leaders gathered for the purpose of developing a car specifically for the North American marketplace. To compete against the “Big 3” (Chrysler, Ford, GM), the men realized that serious upgrades were in order. The MG needed more modern, up-to-date styling. Turning and handling needed improvement. A smoother ride was mandatory. More creature comforts, such as optional heaters and radios, were to be included. And of course, left hand driving.

At the Earl’s Court Motor Show in 1952, the MG was promoted as “the one you’ve always wanted to drive.” The MG-TD Roadster “Goes like a flash.” A 1953 ad promised a new MG for less than $65 per month and, “No other car can boast such bloodlines, such a history of continuous successes. It brings the fun back into driving.” One sore point with MG purists was the lack of wire wheels, which became one of the most popular aftermarket accessories.
