Kaiser-Frazer launched the Henry J in honor of the company chairman, Henry J. Kaiser. After achieving success in building Liberty Ships during WWII, Kaiser entered the automotive field. With help from a federal loan, Kaiser-Frazer was charged with building a five-passenger vehicle capable of maintaining 50 MPH for an acceptable duration, and costing around $1,300. In 1951, the Henry J won the Fashion Academy Gold Medal Award.
In May of 1953, the Henry J won the Mobilgas Economy Run. Sears and Roebuck contracted to sell the car under the Allstate badge, featuring a unique grill and hood. However, sales dropped dramatically. Consumers equated car size with price, and the Henry J was perceived as a “poor man’s car.” Unfortunately for Henry J., Kaiser’s success in building ships did not replicate in the automotive industry, and the company failed.
