Ford began the 1955 model year strong with the introduction of the Thunderbird. Just slightly more expensive than GM’s Corvette, the Thunderbird offered more options like power-assisted windows, brakes, seats, and white wall tires. Standard was the removable fiberglass top with an optional rayon convertible top. No one at GM should have been surprised at the T-bird’s success. Former Cadillac designer Frank Hershey, responsible for the “fabulous fin” craze was now employed at Ford.
Inspired by WWII fighter planes, Hershey incorporated aeronautical design into the Thunderbird. A visible example is the aircraft-inspired wrap-around windshield. One confusing style element arose, however. In 1954 several promotional vehicles were unveiled with spear-type decorations on the car’s sides. The entire back page of the November 1954 issue of Motor Trend featured Thunderbirds of this design! However, it was decided that these did not fit the Thunderbird’s look, and never appeared on the production cars.
