Originally conceived by Italian scooter and refrigerator manufacturer Renzo Rivolta of Iso SpA, the Isetta or “little Iso” car is completely unconventional. Introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1953, the little Isetta caused a big furor. Perfect for navigating Europe’s narrow streets, the “little Iso” was franchised by many companies, BMW being the most familiar. With a few modifications, the little Italian car was the salvation of this German manufacturer.

Post WWII, BMW was teetering on bankruptcy. The market for their luxury 501 model was slim. Motorcycle sales were good but insufficient to keep the company solvent. The Isetta was the perfect gap between BMW’s market extremes. Redesigned to accommodate BMW’s 250 cc engine with suspension changes and the addition of a fourth wheel in the rear, the car was introduced in April 1955. BMW’s “Motorcoupe” was an instant hit.
