First introduced in 1955 and designed by Virgil Exner, the Fury was introduced as a sub-model of the Plymouth Belvedere. In 1959, the Fury separated from the Belvedere and became its own model. The Sport Fury features popular and prominent tailfins, as well as a spare wheel cover on the deck lid. There was much debate over the spare tire. Some felt it should not be simulated, and others preferred the bumper-mounted option.
The Sport Fury also features front-seat swivel chairs that turn to face the curb. At the touch of a button, passengers slide into the interior, with a wide armrest separating the seats. Another option was a record player that was mounted underneath the dashboard. The Fury also had a rearview mirror that would automatically dim when a car behind was driven with its bright lights on.
