By 1961, the Corvette was being hailed as one of the best production cars in the world. Over that year, many ideas for improvements had been considered, including a rear-engine model. The designers, engineers, and GM executives knew the time had come for a redesign. Zora Arkus-Duntov developed a new chassis, and for the first time in Corvette’s history, wind tunnel testing defined the final shape.
Styling changes for 1965 were minimal, but the big news—one heralded by the automotive press as “Finally!”—was that the Corvette would now be equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. Arkus-Duntov felt this response made it look like Corvette engineers were “blind, backward, or obstinate” for not doing this sooner. However, the existing drum brake system survived the 12 hours at Sebring without any problem, but, aware of the “sex appeal” of disc brakes, the change was made.
