Introduced on April 14, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair, the first-generation Ford Mustang was an immediate hit with everyone from high school students to grandparents. This particular Mustang convertible is one of 559,000 units built that year. In fact, on the first day the company’s order books opened, Ford sold 22,000 of them, a record that still stands today. Unlike its main crosstown rivals from Dodge, Plymouth, and General Motors, the Mustang has been in continuous production since 1964.
In addition to selling like hotcakes and popularizing a new type of car for a new customer base, the Mustang came in a wide variety of colors, offered an array of interior trim packages, and offered various performance and creature comfort options. The V-8 in this particular car was one of four available engines. Customers could also pick between three different body styles and three transmission packages.
