Initially introduced in 1962 as a companion to the MGA, the first-generation MG Midget MKI was a badge-engineered version of the Austin-Healey Sprite introduced in 1958. The Midget MKI had a different grille and badging from the Sprite, but its remaining specifications were shared. MG enthusiasts on a budget bought Midgets enthusiastically for 20 years.

By 1964, the second-generation Midget MKII was equipped with wind-up windows and external door handles. The quarter-elliptic rear springs were replaced with semi-elliptic springs for a more comfortable ride. The second generation was offered until 1966, with a total of 26,601 units produced. The third-generation Midget MKIII replaced the MKII in 1966 and remained in production until the Midget line ended in 1974.
