When introduced, the Valiant’s main mission was providing reliable, economical transportation and it did this very well. 1966 brought a fresh new look and, with the exception of the doors and decklid, virtually everything else was redesigned; a surprise considering the car was slated for a total makeover in 1967. Valiant now supported a crisper and more substantial appearance.  Forward leaning fenders, a new split grill design, and a more formal and flatter roofline gave the Valiant a new look.

Despite the $17.6 million spent updating the ’66 Valiant sales declined. It may have been competition from the new, long hood and short deck Ford Falcon and the re-skinned Chevy II. Or perhaps it was the attractive new Plymouth Belvedere, one of the new mid-sized cars that were popular industry wide, drawing attention and sales away from smaller cars. The Mid-Sixties Valiant had good looks, solid engineering and outstanding value for the money, which pleased many customers.
