Although the Studebaker Golden Hawk is often classified as the first American Muscle Car, General Motors may disagree. Their 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 raced to the top of NASCAR standings with 6 wins in 9 races in 1949. That car became the subject of the first rock-n-roll song Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenson. The Camaro was GM’s response to Ford’s Mustang. When asked what the word meant, Production Managers would say “A small vicious animal that eats Mustangs.”

The Rally Sport package included a special trip group. Parking lights were located below the bumper and a special grille had headlights hidden behind electrically controlled panels. The R/S badge was proudly displayed on the grille, fenders and gas cap. Bodyside accent strips, black-painted taillight bezels and back-up lights below the back bumper gave the car a sleek look. This car has been extensively modified. The 396 cu. in engine and other modifications are not original to the car.
