Inspired by designer Bill Mitchell’s 1950s Sting Ray racer, the Corvette Sting Ray first appeared in 1963. Design elements drawn from Mitchell’s racer include the creased wheel well arches, a tapered nose, and a tail with a beltline that stretches from both ends. The name “Sting Ray” was used on all C2 (1963-1967, 2nd generation) cars. It continued as part of the Corvette name during the C3 (3rd generation). However, from 1968 through 1976, it was spelled as one word, “Stingray.”
For the 1969 model year, the Stingray script logo was removed. It did not appear again until the 2013 debut of the 2014 C7 (7th generation) Corvette, which is still used today. Many consider the 1967 Sting Ray as one of the best-looking Corvettes. The styling is similar to past models, but sleeker. Minimal changes included relocating the parking brake from under the dashboard to the center console, and on the exterior, five shorter front-fender gills replaced the former three.
