In 1968, Ford revamped the exterior of the Shelby GT500, which was now offered as a coupe and a convertible. Both 1968 GTs shared an updated and distinctive front-end design that included a new fiberglass hood with twin air scoops, a thin chrome bumper, a larger grille, revised head and tail lamps, sequential rear turning signals inspired by the 1965 Thunderbird, and a decklid spoiler. Handling was improved thanks to E70X15 tires, staggered rear shocks, and competition suspension.
The GT500’s 428 cubic inch Police Interceptor engine, continued from 1967, but its dual quad manifold was replaced with a single 650 cfm 4-barrel carburetor. Despite the induction change, the engine’s output rose from 355 HP to 360 HP. The partnership between Ford Motor Company and Carroll Shelby came to an end. Shelby was completely phased out by late 1968. Production of these cars was shifted to the A.O. Smith facility in Illinois.
