The Dodge Dart evolved as automobile manufacturers were forced to forsake the traditional one-size-fits-all strategy for their marques. The Big Three added compacts in 1960 and mid-size or intermediates around 1962, and with the introduction of the Mustang in 1964, they graduated to pony cars. Additionally, full-size and sport compact muscle cars were also introduced, and before long, the lines between these categories of vehicles blurred, creating whole new niches of automobiles.
The Dart experienced a series of transformations. Beginning as a full-sized car in 1962, it transformed into an intermediate and replaced the Lancer in the compact class. In 1963, the sporty Dodge Dart GT was introduced, and in 1967, it underwent a makeover that enhanced its appearance significantly. With a 273-cubic-inch engine, it was already competitive in terms of power; however, adding a larger 318-cubic-inch engine elevated the Dodge Dart GT to a new level, surpassing even the Dodge Dart GTS.
