Originally, the Lincoln Continental Mark III was to rival Ford’s Thunderbird, but news of the new Cadillac Eldorado prompted a change of plans. The Mark III would be Lincoln’s top-of-the-line model, its most expensive and prestigious offering directly competing with the front-wheel drive Eldorado. In a battle of corporate egos, the contest between the Eldorado Brougham and the Mark II, 10 years earlier, ended in a draw. The Mark III going head-to-head with the FWD Eldorado offered a rematch that Ford embraced.

The upright Rolls-Royce-type grill, extensive use of real walnut veneer in the interior, and the rear deck spare tire hump received Henry Ford II’s positively covetous reaction and approval. The Mark III was now ready for a fight. The Eldorado did little to boost Cadillac’s total sales; however, the Mark III increased Lincoln’s business significantly and became profitable. With extravagant styling, the Mark III looked like money, and buyers responded enthusiastically. Ford won this round.
