The Comet returned in 1971 as a compact car, essentially a Ford Maverick with better makeup. Next, the more “sportier” version, the Comet GT, was introduced. According to Mercury, the GT “imparted the appearance of performance” with a “competition car look.” This was achieved with a blacked-out grille and a color-keyed hood scoop. Completing the look were bucket seats, side graphics, dual race-type mirrors, and upgraded wheel trim.

A GT-branded car is expected to have some horsepower under the hood. Like the Chevy Nova, Dodge Demon, and even the AMC Hornet, a V-8 engine was installed. Powerhouse? Not exactly. With only a 2-barrel carburetor the Comet had vigorous acceleration but lagged behind its competition in quarter-mile runs. According to Auto Week, the Comet and the Ford Maverick were “disposable cars. Most were discarded at the end of their life with no more ceremony than a used tissue.” That’s a tad harsh, we think.
