Launched in 1960, the Saab 96 finished a successful 20-year run on Jan. 8, 1980. Race car driver Master Erik Carlsson drove the last car off the plant assembly line and right into the company museum in Trollhatan. The sedan version, the 96, and its station wagon contemporary, the 95, were not only staples in the consumer market, but the 96 had considerable success in motorsports in the hands of Erik Carlsson and the legendary Pat Moss-Carlsson.

Saab is also known for innovations such as heated driver’s seats. Safety is a priority, and the locks and door handles were designed to function in the event of equipment failure or body damage. This car was Barbara Lowery’s high school graduation present, and she could choose any car she wanted. One writer for Autoweek equated the 96s’ ability to charm as a pleasant case of Stockholm Syndrome.
