The jaunty little Volkswagen Type 181, famously known as “The Thing,” is an internationally known vehicle. First appearing in 1964, the Type 181 served as a West German Army reconnaissance vehicle before being reworked for public sales as the Type 181 Kurierwagen (“courier car”). The Type 181 (LHD) and Type 182 (RHD) were known by many names: “The Trekker” in the United Kingdom, “The Safari” in Mexico and South America, “The Pesaccia” in Italy, and “The Thing” in North America.

The Type 181’s American version debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show. By 1973, “The Thing” was exported into the US via Mexico. The model was equipped with German-built Super Beetle engines and transmissions, which were shipped to the VW factory in Puebla, Mexico for installation and assembly before they were sent to US Volkswagen dealerships. The last year for “The Thing” in the US was 1975 because it failed to meet new safety standards. Fondly remembered, it still brings a smile to all who see it.
