In 1971, the chief stylist of American Motors Company, Richard Teague, was busy designing the iconic Pacer. During the mid-1970s oil crisis, the Pacer couldn’t have made its debut at a better time. With its short but wide, compact design, the Pacer provided a futuristic, bold, and unique economy car. By the end of its first production, a total of 145,528 Pacers were sold.
From 1975 to 1977, American Motors Company (AMC) offered the Pacer X trim package, which included vinyl-covered bucket seats, custom trim, a floor-mounted gear shift, and a front sway bar to keep the vehicle from rolling over, and Pacer X decals for the exterior. Over the years, popular gear-head magazines described the Pacer as “The Flying Fishbowl” and deemed it “the seventies answer to George Jetson’s mode of transportation.” (Car and Driver, May 1976).
