Known for being the infamous time machine from the 1985 Back to the Future movie series, the DeLorean DMC-12 is the brainchild of John DeLorean. Before DeLorean Motor Company (DMC), DeLorean was one of the youngest division heads in GM history. Current CEO of DMC and the owner of the DeLorean inventory, Stephen Wynne, affectionately remembers the ’81 DeLorean DMC-12 as the “Tesla of the past.”
Unfortunately, during the car’s short-lived production years, which lasted until 1983, it did not function as futuristically as it appeared. Despite John DeLorean being indicted and facing trial in 1982, the car’s exterior look managed to keep interested drivers buying a DeLorean. By 1983, 9,000 DeLoreans had been built before the model was discontinued. Despite the unappealing mechanics and John DeLorean’s drug trial, the DeLorean DMC-12 managed to be immortalized in American automotive and cultural history.
