After Porsche debuted in 1963, company officials wondered if the 911 could last beyond the early 80s. In addition, America, with its ever-expanding government-issued regulations, was Porsche’s largest market. Developing a new car from the ground up is a significant undertaking for any auto manufacturer, but there could be no mistakes for a small company such as Porsche. In addition, in a break from Porsche tradition, offering a front-engine car as the top-of-the-line flagship was a daunting proposition.
When designing the 911’s replacement, everything was open for change. The 928 would have to be able to adapt and conform to current and future safety regulations. The question, “What could be the greatest closed GT coupe Porsche could build?” was answered with the 928, the only V8 in the Porsche lineup. Hopeful of a minimum sales life of at least a decade, the 928 was finally retired in 1995 after a strong 17-year run.
