1987 was an outstanding year for the truck industry-wide, but Chevrolet faced a second consecutive year of declining sales. Although light-duty trucks were popular, the combination of passenger vehicles and pickup trucks waned. Customers opted for compact vans and SUVs. 1987 was the last full production year for the El Camino. A few hundred were manufactured in the first four months of 1988 before the model was discontinued. Some sources believe these were retitled leftovers from 1987.
Although the El Camino has been out of production for over 30 years, it still maintains a strong following among car enthusiasts. Perhaps its ongoing popularity is due to the El Camino embodied in Chevrolet’s slogan, “Most dependable, most long-lasting.” Between 2003 and 2006, Chevrolet’s SSR took the El Camino concept one step further. With its removable top, the truck transformed into a two-seat roadster. Models come and go. Time will tell if the El Camino resurfaces to grace the highways.
