1987 was an outstanding year for trucks industry-wide, but Chevrolet faced a second consecutive year of declining sales. Although light-duty trucks were popular, the combination passenger vehicle and pickup truck waned. Customers opted for compact vans and SUVs. 1987 was the last full production year for the El Camino. A few hundred were manufactured in the first four months of 1988 before the model was discontinued. Some sources believe these were retitled leftovers from 1987.
The El Camino has been out of production for over 30 years, however, it still maintains a strong following among car enthusiasts. Perhaps its ongoing popularity is that the El Camino embodied Chevrolet’s slogan “Most dependable, most long-lasting.” Although this El Camino is not badged as a Super Sport, the RPO code Z15 that verifies this is an SS model is located on the factory parts identification sticker inside the glove box.
