El Camino…the last generation. Following its debut in 1959, the El Camino went through five different generations, and the longest was from 1978 to 1987. The original idea of a hybrid car/truck had roots in the Depression, and Chevrolet’s response was a short-lived coupe pickup. However, the release of the Ranchero by Ford in 1957 changed consumers’ minds about what an automobile could be. Chevrolet was inspired to produce something that would not just rival but would surpass the Ranchero.

During its first year on the market, the El Camino easily outsold the Ranchero. Style-wise, the Ranchero was boring compared to the El Camino’s horizontal fins and cat-eye taillights. Throughout the years, Ford and Chevrolet battled back and forth to see who could produce the best multi-purpose vehicle. As Chevrolet was ramping up its fifth generation of the El Camino, Ford put the Ranchero to bed in 1979. The confirmed winner, the El Camino lasted eight more years before the brand was finally retired
