Initially an upgraded version of the Oldsmobile F-85 line, the Cutlass underwent various iterations, including Supremes, Supreme Broughams, Salons, and Calais coupes. In 1967, the Cutlass Supreme became a separate model series and remained in production for 30 years. Standard equipment for 1988 included: halogen headlights, four-wheel power disc brakes, “lubed-for-life” suspension, air conditioning, and “wet arm” windshield wipers. Midway through the model year, the Cutlass Supreme was revamped from Rear Wheel Drive to Front Wheel Drive. This car has only 7,500 original miles on the odometer.
Oldsmobile, however, was in a free fall of sorts, with an almost 28% drop in sales for 1987. The slide continued in 1988 with an additional 10% drop in sales. However, there were a few bright spots. Aeronautical legend Chuck Yeager “piloted” a turbocharged, 250 HP open-air Cutlass Supreme pace car at the 1988 Indianapolis 500. For muscle car enthusiasts, the 20th Anniversary Hurst/Olds Cutlass Supreme, featuring an aero-appearance package by the Hurst/Aero group, was released as a limited edition.
