A friendship between Lee Iacocca, then head of Chrysler, and Alejandro de Tomaso, owner of Maserati, blossomed into a business collaboration between their two firms. The result was the TC sports coupe, whose main objective was to shed Chrysler’s image of blue-collar vehicles. The Italian design influences and the turbocharged Daytona engine dispelled any notions that this was a business-as-usual Chrysler. Maserati-branded valve covers gave the motor its “Maserati engine” nickname.
Working together, the two companies produced a luxurious sports car reminiscent of the 1950s Thunderbird. The Italian-produced body featured hand-crafted leather interior, with hand stitching on the dash, armrests, and other areas. The convertible came with a manually operated cloth-lined top, and a detachable hardtop with beveled-glass opera windows. Power windows, seats, door, and truck locks are just a few of the luxurious amenities Chrysler by Maserati offered.
