Although never specifically mentioned, it is hard to miss the similarity between the Chevy 454SS pickup and the race car of “The Intimidator” Dale Earnhardt Sr. Onyx Black body with silver and red accents and Garnet interior mirrored the look of NASCAR’s iconic “3”. Proudly wearing the “SS” badge representing Chevy’s most competitive offerings, and powered by one of the last big-block engines, the 454SS could lay down rubber in a cloud of smoke.

A combination of a powerful engine in a lightweight pickup caught the attention and pocketbooks of younger drivers. However, the 454SS was not just about speed. Both driver and passenger rode in air-conditioned comfort on bolstered sport seats. A tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and anti-lock brakes further enhanced the driving experience. The AM/FM/cassette stereo was equipped with a graphic equalizer for listening enjoyment. With a 1,000-pound payload, the 454SS was more about play and not about work.
