In 1961, Ford planted a seed that would blossom beyond their wildest dreams. Claiming their trucks, “Drives like a car, works like a truck”, the message was directed at noncommercial truck users. By 1977 Ford’s F-Series trucks were the top pickups in the U.S., and in 1981 were the number one selling vehicle in America. Ford’s domination of the market can be attributed to continuing upgrades in technology, efficiency and passenger comfort.

Initially released as the heavy-duty option for Ford’s F-100 pickup, the F-150 became the company’s go-to, light-duty truck in 1984. In 1992, the F-150s restyling gave it a cleaner streamlined profile. For 1994 safety features such as a driver’s side airbag and side-guard door beams were standard equipment. In 1995 the F-150 became the best-selling vehicle worldwide, and today it is still a favorite of noncommercial truck owners. Ford’s redefinition of the pickup truck is still going strong today.
