In 1971, a new member of Mercury’s royal family was introduced, the Marquis. Twenty-eight years later, the third-generation vehicles continued to uphold the brand’s standard of excellence. Undergoing a major refreshing in 1998, exterior changes were confined to minor trim revisions. Two important features, anti-lock brakes and all-speed traction assist (ABS) were now available as free-standing options on the GS. However, items that were standard equipment were sure to please customers.
A fabric-covered, reclining split-bench seat with fold-down armrest allowed front seat passengers to ride comfortably. The power driver’s seat was standard, options included leather upholstery and dual power front seats. Driver features included a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering. Additional features were power windows and child door locks. Unique alloy wheels and rear spoiler were available as options. The Marquis badge was a mainstay of the Mercury lineup until it was retired in 2011.
