Aston Martin’s first DB series car appeared in 1950. Named for David Brown, who purchased the company in 1947 and Lagonda in 1948, it morphed from a low-volume sports car manufacturer to its big-name today. James Bond’s DB5 and Aston Martin’s sporting credentials gave the car worldwide recognition. The badge ended in 1972 when Brown sold the company, but was resurrected in the 1990s when Aston Martin made a comeback under Ford’s stewardship.
The DB7 Vantage appeared in 1999 and ran through 2003. Ford intended to make the DB7 a volume seller. At the time, Ford also owned and could draw parts from Jaguar, which lowered the developmental costs. The body designed by Ian Callum and Keith Helfet is all steel and pays homage to the Jaguar XJS. The car has been described as one of the most beautiful production cars with softly curved lines emblematic of the 1990s automotive scene.
