The genesis of Club Car can be traced back to Igloo Products of Katy, TX and Landreth Machine in Dallas, TX. Orville Landreth, an owner of Igloo, filed a patent application for a golf car design in 1960. When Igloo merged with Production Tooling Company, Landreth acquired the tooling and rights to the golf car. Bill Stevens Sr. acquired Landreth Machine in 1962, relocated the company to Augusta, GA, and renamed Landreth’s creation the Club Car.

Bill Steven’s and his son drove their new Club Car for six days to the 1962 PGA Show in Dunedin, FL. Club Car quickly gained a reputation for quality golf cars, pioneering features such as the steering wheel and the foot accelerator. By 1999 Club Car was the leading golf cart brand, and in 2001 celebrated the sale of its one-millionth vehicle. A fascination with woodies continues today, and kits to turn a Club Car into a woodie are available.

The DS line, designed by Dom Saporito, debuted in 1980 and became the industry standard for performance and longevity.
